A complete guide on how to create a pfSense VM on a local Hyper-V server, prepare it for Microsoft Azure, upload the disk to Azure and create a multi-NIC VM.

Download the latest image from https://www.pfsense.org/download/

Open Hyper-V Manager create a Generation 1 VM. I added 4096 ram, 2 cores, use VHD, add an extra NIC (for second interface)  and select the downloaded ISO. (create a fixed VHD as Azure supports only fixed VHDs for custom VMs)

Start the VM and at the first screen press enter.

At all screens I accepted the default settings. Finally at the reboot prompt remove the installation ISO.

There is no need to setup VLANs, select the second interface for WAN and the first for LAN.

Once the pfSense is ready press 2 and change the LAN (hn0) interface IP to one at your network. Then select the option 14 to enable SSH.

Now we can login with putty, with username admin password pfsense and press 8 for Shell access.

The first thing is to update the packages running:

pkg upgrade

Python

Then install Python, as it is requirement for the Azure Linux Agent.

Search for Python packages running:

pkg search python

Install the latest Python package, setup tools and bash:

pkg install -y python27-2.7.14

pkg search setuptools

pkg install py27-setuptools-36.2.2

ln -s /usr/local/bin/python /usr/local/bin/python2.7

pkg install -y bash

Azure Linux Agent

check the agent is running:

waagent -Version

One final step before uploading the VHD to Azure is to set the LAN interface as dhcp.

This can be done by the web interface, go to https://lanaddress, login using admin / pfsense, and go to interfaces / LAN and select DHCPas ipv4 configuration.

Now, shutdown the pfSense and upload it to Azure Storage.

I use the Storage Explorer, https://azure.microsoft.com/en-us/features/storage-explorer/ a free and powerful tool to manage Azure Storage. Login to your Azure Account and press Upload. Select as Blob type: “Page blob”

After the upload is completed we can create a multiple NIC VM. This cannot be accomplished from GUI. We will create this using PowerShell.

Once the VM is created, go to the VM’s blade and scroll down to “Boot diagnostics”. There you can see a screenshot of the VM’s monitor.

Then go to the Networking section and SSH to the Public IP.

and also we can login to the Web Interface of the pfSense

In my case I have added both NICs at the same Subnet, but at a production environment add the LAN interface to the backend subnet and the WAN interface to the DMZ (public) subnet.

Of course more NICs can be added to the VM, one for each Subnet at our environment.

Route external traffic through the pfSense

We cannot change the gateway at an Azure VM, but we can use routing tables to route the traffic through the pfSense.

From the Azure Portal, select New and search for Route table.

We need to configure two things. One is to associate the Route table to a Subnet and the second is to create a Route.

Open the “Route table” and click the “Routes”. Press “Add route” and in order to route all outbound traffic through the pfSense then add for Address prefix “0.0.0.0”, next hop type Virtual appliance” and Net hop address the ip address of the pfSense’s LAN interface IP.

Then go to the “Subnets” and associate the required subnets.

One final thing to do is to enable IP Forwarding at the LAN interface of the pfSense, in order to be able to receive and forward traffic not originated for it.

With the new Dv3 and Ev3 VM sizes Microsoft has released the Nested Virtualization, meaning you can simply have a Hyper-V VM inside an Azure VM. I have created a set of posts to explore the Nested Virtualization functionality. Of course nested virtualization is only supported in Windows Server 2016.

After my main Microsoft Azure Nested Virtualization | Hyper-V VM inside Azure VM post, we saw two usage scenarios. One is running Hyper-V Replica and the other is running Web Server in nested VM on Azure. Now lets have some fun and try to run a VM nested inside a VM nested inside an Azure VM. As a fellow said, VM inception!

We will use again the nested VM that we created at the Microsoft Azure Nested Virtualization | Hyper-V VM inside Azure VM post. First we need to run two commands, one command to enable the virtualization and one to enable the MAC address spoofing. More details you can find at the Nested Virtualization Microsoft article

After running the above commands we can go to the Server Manger and add the Hyper-V role.

I just click next accepting all the defaults. One exception, I checked the NIC to use it for Virtual Switch.

Finally we have a Hyper-V VM that is nested inside a Hyper-V VM that is nested inside an Azure VM

At my previous post, Microsoft Azure Nested Virtualization | Hyper-V VM inside Azure VM, I described how to create a Hyper-V VM inside an Azure VM with the new Dv3 and Ev3 VM sizes. Now we will see how to use a Hyper-V Nested VM as a Web Server that is hidden behind the Azure VM to secure access to your web application.

Starting we will add the IIS Role at the Nested VM. Go to the Server Manager, add Roles and Features and select the Web Server (IIS) Role.

Select the Features that your application requires and Install.

After that we will need to Forward the required ports to the Nested VMs. To accomplish this we will need to use PowerShell.

At my previews post I created a NAT in order to have network communication between the Host and the Nested VM. We will use that NAT to forward the port 80 and 443 to the Nested VM.

At the Host Azure VM open the PowerShell and rum:

Get-NetNat

From the results we can see the NAT Name.

Now we can create the Rules:

Add-NetNatStaticMapping -NatName "NVMNat" -Protocol TCP -ExternalIPAddress 0.0.0.0 -InternalIPAddress 192.168.168.10 -InternalPort 80 -ExternalPort 80
Add-NetNatStaticMapping -NatName "NVMNat" -Protocol TCP -ExternalIPAddress 0.0.0.0 -InternalIPAddress 192.168.168.10 -InternalPort 443 -ExternalPort 443

A final step is to create a rule at the Azure VM’s NSG to allow port 80 & 443 and also open the ports at the Windows Firewall on both the Host and the Nested VMs.

Finally we can browse to the Public IP of the Azure VM and see the IIS Welcome Page of the Nested VM.

Just add an https binding to the IIS default website and also browse at the https page.

After the Microsoft Azure Nested Virtualization | Hyper-V VM inside Azure VM post on how to create a Nested VM inside an Azure VM, I am following with how to have Hyper-V Replica on Azure.

To accomplish this we will use the Azure VM and the Nested VM from the Microsoft Azure Nested Virtualization | Hyper-V VM inside Azure VM post. The first step is to create an identical pair of Azure VM and Nested VM to use for replica server. The only requirement is that the two Azure VMs must have network connectivity. As you understand we can have Hyper-V Replica between two Azure VMs at different Azure Regions using VPN.

Next, at both Azure VMs open the 443 port at both the NSG and the Windows Firewall. For more security we can add the Public IPs of the VMs as Source.

Since the VMs are not part of a domain we need to use Certificate based authentication for the Hyper-V Replica. We will use the New-SelfSignedCertificate command to create both certificates.

The certificate process

First we need to create a root CA certificate, so login at the first host and run:

New-SelfSignedCertificate -Type "Custom" -KeyExportPolicy "Exportable" -Subject "CN=myazurerootca" -CertStoreLocation "Cert:\LocalMachine\My" -KeySpec "Signature" -KeyUsage "CertSign"

Next, using the certificate Thumbprint of the root CA certificate, create two server certificates, one for each Azure VM. To accomplish this run:

New-SelfSignedCertificate -type "Custom" -KeyExportPolicy "Exportable" -Subject "CN=anothertestvm2" -CertStoreLocation "Cert:\LocalMachine\My" -KeySpec "KeyExchange" -TextExtension @("2.5.29.37={text}1.3.6.1.5.5.7.3.1,1.3.6.1.5.5.7.3.2") -Signer "Cert:LocalMachine\My\6A7196D9759FC2F7C49D62E08FA7195310DE5EB7" -Provider "Microsoft Enhanced RSA and AES Cryptographic Provider"

The next step is to open the Certificates mmc (Local Computer) and at the Personal container you will find the three certificates created above.

Right click each certificate and Export it, including the Private key, to a folder

Copy the certificates to the second Azure VM and import them. The root CA certificate needs to be imported to he Trust Root Certification Authorities and the other two to the Personal (or just use automatic placement).

Finally we need to disable the Certificate revocation check for Replication on both Azure VMs. To do this run the following command on both Azure VMs:

REG ADD "HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Virtualization\Replication" /v DisableCertRevocationCheck /d 1 /t REG_DWORD /f

The Hyper-V Replica process

Lets start creating the Hyper-V Replica. Since Hyper-V Replica uses computer names, we need to use the host file to bind the Public IPs with the computer names. So, at the first Azure VM, open an elevated Notepad, browse to the path “C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc”, and open the “hosts” file. Enter the Public IP of the second Azure VM following by the computer name. Do the same at the second Azure VM.

After saving the host file, go to the Hyper-V Settings, go to the “Replication Configuration” and check the “Enable this computer as a Replica Server”. Then check the “Use certificate-based Authentication (HTTPS)” and select the certificate created before. Finally check the “Allow replication from any authenticated servers” and press OK. Do this at both Azure VM Hyper-V Servers.

Next go to the Hyper-V manager, right click the Nested VM and choose “Enable Replica”. Enter the name of the second Azure VM and select the certificate.

I just used the defaults at all the next screens and finally press finish to enable the replication.

Once the replication is enabled you will see the “Replication enabled successfully” message and the Status will change to “Sending Initial Replica”.

After a very short period of time, the VM will complete the initial sync.

At the first port, we will create a Hyper-V VM inside an Azure VM and have Network and Internet Connectivity.

Lets get started. First of all we will need a Dv3 or Ev3 VM and for best Nested Virtualization performance make use of SSD Managed Disks. I created a D4s_v3 Standard  (4Cores, 16GB Ram, SSD managed disks) and I attached a 1023GB SSD Data Disk for performance.

Now remote desktop to the VM to add the Hyper V Role. From the Server Manager, add Roles and Features and add the Hyper-V role

Since this is an one NIC VM select the NIC to create the Virtual Switch

Change the default Store location to the SSD Data Disk, in this case the E: drive.

Finally wait for the installation to complete and reboot the VM. After the VM reboots, Remote Desktop and open the Hyper-V manager. Now we have Hyper-V inside an Azure VM.

Lets create a VM. You can download a Trial Windows Server 2016 from https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/evalcenter/evaluate-windows-server-2016 or use your Subscription (MSDN, EA, etc).

I created a VM Called NestedVM01, with 4GB Ram using the Trial Windows Server 2016 ISO

After the VM creation setup the Windows Server 2016 with all defaults and login.

The first thing to notice is that the Network Interface does not have a valid IP address, since Microsoft Azure will not provide one. In order to have the Nested VM to have Network connectivity we need to use NAT.

First change the Virtual Switch to “Internal network”

At the Host’s Network interfaces, open the vEthernet NIC and add a static IP, only IP & Mask

Now we will need PowerShell, since we cannot configure NAT form the GUI.

Open the PowerShell (still at the Host Azure VM) and run

New-NetNat –Name NVMNat –InternalIPInterfaceAddressPrefix 192.168.168.0/24

The result:

After that we can provide the Nested VMs with IPs form the 192.168.168.0/24 range. So login to the Nested VM and add an IP fron the Range and for Default Gateway add the Host’s IP.

For DNS add your AD DNS or a Public DNS server just to have internet.

Now from the Nested VM you can ping the Host:

And also browse the Internet:

Of course this Features opens the door for many more features to test, like Hyper-V Replica, Containers, etc, that we will see in future posts.

This post is about how to Auto Shutdown Hyper-v core with UPS using PowerShell and also send email notifications based to UPS battery level.

Recently i installed a Windows Hyper-V 2012 R2 server (the free version) but my UPS doesn’t support Windows Core. No problem, we have PowerShell!! after some search on various sites – blogs – etc i end up creating the following script. It checks the battery status every 3 minutes, using WMI and when the battery drops below 50% is sends the shutdown signal. As long as you set the VMs to save on shutdown you are OK!

I also added a simple mail notification before the shutdown.

Πάμε τώρα για το τελευταίο κομμάτι του lab, να προσθέσουμε AlwaysOn Availability Group στο υπάρχον SQL WSFC.

Add AlwaysOn AG to SQL Failover Cluster Instance

Για αρχή πρέπει να ενεργοποιήσουμε το “AlwaysOn High Availability” setting και στα δύο Nodes του υπάρχοντος Cluster. Εδώ να τονίσουμε πως η επιλογή υπάρχει μόνο στη Enterprise έκδοση και όχι στην Standard. Ανοίγουμε λοιπόν το SQL Server Configuration Manager / SQL Server Services / SQL Server (NAME) , δεξί click Properties και στην καρτέλα “AlwaysOn High Availability” επιλέγουμε το “Enable AlwaysOn Availability Groups”. Με το που θα πατήσουμε Apply θα μας ενημερώσει ότι η αλλαγή θα περάσει στον SQL στο επόμενο restart.

Δεν κάνουμε restart.

Τώρα για να γίνει η αλλαγή στο δεύτερο Node πρέπει να κάνουμε manual failover για να σηκωθεί το service της SQL. Όπως είχαμε κάνει και στο τέλος του προηγούμενου Post, όταν εγκαταστήσαμε το δεύτερο SQL Node, από το Failover Cluster Manager κάνουμε move το SQL Server Role στο δεύτερο Node. Τώρα άμα ανοίξετε το SQL Server Configuration Manager θα δείτε ότι το SQL Server service έχει γίνει stop και το SQL Server service τρέχει στο δεύτερο Node με ενεργοποιημένο με το AlwaysOn. Τέλος ξανακάνουμε move το SQL Server Role στο πρώτο Node.

Στη συνέχεια πάμε να βάλουμε τον τρίτο server στο υπάρχον Windows Failover Cluster. Ανοίγουμε το Failover Cluster Manager από το πρώτο Node (Win2012R201 στο lab) και πατάμε Nodes / Add Node…

Ξεκινάει ο Wizard, πατάμε το πρώτο Next και στο Select Servers επιλέγουμε τον τρίτο server (Win2012R203 στο lab) και πατάμε Next.
Για να περάσει το verification πρέπει ο server να έχει ήδη το Failover Cluster feature, κάτι που στο lab υπάρχει από το template.

Μιας και αυτό το Node δεν θα είναι ουσιαστικά μέρος του Failover Cluster αλλά το θέλουμε μόνο για το AlwaysOn, επιλέγουμε να μην κάνει τα validation test και να μην βάλει storage.

Τώρα πρέπει να σιγουρεύουμε ότι δεν θα προσπαθήσει το Cluster να σηκώσει την SQL στο τρίτο Node που θα είναι για το AlwaysOn.
Αφού προστεθεί το Node στο Cluster πρέπει να πάμε πρώτα στο Failover Cluster Manager / WSFCcomputername (sqlclus.sqllab.int για το lab), επιλέγουμε από τα Cluster Core Resources στο Server Name το computer name του sql cluster (sqlclus για το lab) και δεξί click properties.

Πηγαίνουμε στο Advanced Policies tab και απόεπιλέγουμε το τρίτο Node, όπως στην εικόνα

Στην συνέχεια στον SQL Server Ρόλο, δεξί click properties και να επιλέξουμε preferred owners τα δύο πρώτα Nodes μόνο.

Το ίδιο κάνουμε και για τα δύο Cluster Disks

Τώρα κάνουμε μια τυπική εγκατάσταση SQL Server 2012 στο τρίτο Node, με τα ίδια settings που κάναμε και για το Cluster, με τη διαφορά ότι θα κάνουμε Stand Alone Setup και όχι Cluster και πρέπει να δώσουμε διαφορετικό instance name γιατί το Default instane (MSSQLSERVER) υπάρχει στο Cluster. Επίσης δίνουμε έναν δίσκο στο Server με ίδιο γράμμα με αυτό που έχουν οι servers στο Cluster για την SQL. Στο lab είναι F:.

Αφού ολοκληρωθεί η εγκατάσταση ενεργοποιούμε το AlwaysOn κι εδώ από το SQL Server Configuration Manager και κάνουμε restart το SQL server service.
Επίσης σε αυτό το σημείο να αναφέρω ότι επειδή χρησιμοποιούμε ένα Named instance, κάθε φορά που ξεκινάει το SQL Server service καταχωρεί ένα SPN record το οποίο χρειάζεται για να μπορέσουν οι εφαρμογές να κάνουν authenticate με τον SQL Server. Για να μπορέσει να γίνει αυτό πρέπει το account που τρέχει το SQL Server service να έχει δικαίωμα να διαβάζει και να γράφει serviceprinipalnames στο Active Directory. Στο lab χρησιμοποίησα Domain Admin account οπότε το SPN καταχωρείται σωστά.

Μπορούμε πλέον να ξεκινήσουμε την διαδικασία να βάλουμε την βάση μας σε AlwaysOn Availability Group.
Από το active node του WSFC ανοίγουμε το SQL Management Studio και συνδεόμαστε στο SCL Cluster Instance, στο LAB “SQLFCI”. Πρώτα κάνουμε ένα backup την βάση μας, μιας που είναι προαπαιτούμενο για να προχωρήσουμε. Παίρνουμε το backup και το κάνουμε restore στο τρίτο Node, Win2012R203 στο lab αλλά προσοχή, επιλέγουμε στο restore Options / Recovery state / RESTORE WITH NORECOVERY

Αφού ολοκληρωθεί το restore η βάση θα πρέπει να έχει δημιουργηθεί και να είναι σε (Restoring…)

Μετά πηγαίνουμε στο πρώτο Node, Win2012R201 στο lab, SQL Management Studio, στο “AlwaysOn High Availability” και με δεξί click στο Availability Groups πατάμε “New Availability Group Wizard…”

Ανοίγει ο Wizard και μετά το πρώτο next δίνουμε Availability group name

Στο επόμενο βήμα επιλέγουμε την βάση που θέλουμε να βάλουμε σε Availability Group

Στο επόμενο βήμα πρέπει να ορίσουμε replicas. Έχει ήδη το SQFCI, και μάλιστα μας ενημερώνει ότι επειδή είναι Failover Cluster Instance δεν υποστηρίζει automatic failover. Αυτό σημαίνει ότι όταν χάσουμε όλο το Cluster (SQL Cluster Instance) θα πρέπει να πάμε στο τρίτο Node (Win2012R203 στο lab) στο SQL management studio / AlwaysON High Availability / Availability Groups /  και με δεξί click πάνω στο “AG Aname” κάνουμε manual failover. 

Κάνουμε connect στο τρίτο Node, Win2012R203\MSSQLAG

Αφού προστεθεί και ο Win2012R203, επιλέγουμε Readable Secondary και ανάλογα την χρήση επιλέγουμε Synchronous ή όχι Commit. Όπως είπα και στην αρχή του πρώτου Post, “Η ιδέα είναι να έχουμε ένα SQL Flailover Cluster στο Primary Site και στο υπάρχον Cluster να προσθέσουμε ένα AlwaysOn Availability group για το DR” η χρήση του Availability Group είναι για DR Site για να αποφύγουμε latency στο Commit το αφήνουμε unchecked. Έτσι θα έχουμε asynchronous commit και θα αποφύγουμε το latency με ένα “φόβο” για Data Loss τη στιγμή που θα χρειαστεί Failover.

Τέλος πατάμε Next.

Στην επόμενη καρτέλα επιλέγουμε το «Join only” αφού έχουμε κάνει ήδη restore την βάση, και πατάμε Next

Στην καρτέλα validation αγνοούμε το warning για τον Listener, θα τον δημιουργήσουμε μετά

Και πατάμε Finish για να δημιουργήσει το Group

Σε αυτό το σημείο μπορούμε να δημιουργήσουμε Listener, ο οποίος θα είναι multi-sunet, δηλαδή θα έχει μια IP από κάθε subnet.

Αν έχουμε περισσότερα από ένα Azure VMs στο Always ON θα χρειαστούμε έναν Internal Azure Load Balancer. O Load Balancer θα έχει για backend pool τα Azure VMs που συμμετέχουν στο Always ON Availability Groups. Αυτό που πρέπει να προσέξουμε στο load balancing rule είναι να ενεργοποιήσουμε το Floating IP (Direct Server Return). You don’t need Session persistence. Για probe χρησιμοποιούμε την 59999.

Ορίζουμε την IP του Load Balancer στο Cluster με το παρακάτω PowerShell script. Αυτό το script θα επιτρέψει στην cluster IP να παντάει στο load balancer. Το τρέχουμε στο active node του failover cluster.

Στην περίπτωσή μας, ο Listener θα έχει μια IP από το FCI cluster & μια από το AlwaysOn subnet on Azure.

Σε μια εγκατάσταση που όλα τα SQL Instances είναι single ένας Listener χρησιμεύει για common name, ώστε να οδηγεί κάθε φορά τις εφαρμογές στο σωστό server.

Τέλος να πούμε ότι η διαχείριση του Failover Cluster SQL Instance γίνετε μέσω του Windows Server Failover Cluster Manager, όπως π.χ. το manual failover, όπως είδαμε και στο προηγούμενο post.  Ενώ η διαχείριση του Always On High Availability γίνετε από το SQL Management Studio.

Αυτό είναι το δεύτερο Post της τριλογίας SQL Failover Cluster with AlwaysOn Availability Groups. Είναι η ώρα της SQL.

Microsoft SQL 2012 on Failover Cluster

Για το lab θα χρησιμοποιήσω τον Domain Administrator, αλλά δεν ενδείκνυται για παραγωγικό περιβάλλον!!!

Βάζουμε το ISO της SQL 2012 SP2 και ξεκινάμε με “new SQL server failover cluster installation”

Αφού περάσει τα checks δίνουμε key, για το lab φυσικά επέλεξα evaluation,  και φτιάχνουμε στο install για να ξεκινήσουμε την εγκατάσταση.

Αγνοούμε επιδεικτικά το MSDTC error (ήδη από τον 2008) και αν δεν έχουμε errors προχωράμε. Επιλέγουμε το SQL Feature installation και μετά επιλέγουμε μόνο Database Engine Services με τις υποκατηγορίες και το management tools

Δίνουμε network name για το SQL Cluster και προχωράμε

Δίνουμε όνομα για το cluster resource group ή αφήνουμε το default (όπως έκανα κι εγώ για το lab)

Στο επόμενο βήμα μας ενημερώνει ότι δεν υπάρχει διαθέσιμος δίσκος για το SQL Cluster Disk, μιας και ο υπάρχον έγινε Cluster Quorum, οπότε πάμε να δώσουμε έναν ακόμη δίσκο στα Cluster Resources.

Προσθέτουμε έναν ακόμα δίσκο στο FreeNAS μιας και ένας θα χρειαστεί για το Cluster Quorum και ο άλλος για SQL Cluster Disk. Αφού το δώσουμε στο VM πηγαίνουμε στο web interface του FreeNAS και πάμε στο Storage/Volume manager, διαλέγουμε τον δίσκο δίνουμε όνομα, έδωσα sql, και πατάμε add volume

Μετά πάμε στο view volumes, επιλέγουμε το sql και πατάμε το create zvol κουμπί, όπως φαίνεται και στην εικόνα

Δίνουμε όνομα και size και πατάμε Add zvol

Μετά πάμε στο Sharing/ISCSI/extents και πατάμε add extent, δίνουμε όνομα, επιλέγουμε device το zvol που φτιάξαμε, διαλέγουμε Logical Block Size, για SQL DBs ενδείκνυται το 512, και πατάμε ok

Τέλος πάμε στο associated targets, πατάμε add target/extent και προσθέτουμε τον extent που φτιάξαμε.
Τώρα αν πάμε στους servers στο disk management και κάνουμε refresh τους δίσκους βλέπουμε τον νέο δίσκο και τον κάνουμε online, initiate και format, μόνο προσοχή να δώσετε allocation unit 512 για να συμβαδίζει με του FreeNAS αλλιώς η SQL θα γκρινιάξει.

Ανοίγουμε το Failover Cluster Manager/Storage/Disks και πατάμε add Disk και προσθέτουμε τον νέο δίσκο.

Και έχουμε έναν διαθέσιμο δίσκο στο Cluster μας

Πίσω τώρα στο SQL Setup, κάνουμε refresh και αυτόματα επιλέγει τον νέο δίσκο

Στη συνέχεια δίνουμε στατική IP στο SQL Cluster Network, φυσικά από το Domain subnet

Δίνουμε service accounts, για το Lab όπως είπα χρησιμοποιώ τον Domain Admin, αλλά ποτέ σε production.

Στο Server Configuration δίνουμε ποιοι θα έχουν admin rights στην SQL

Και στο Data Directories tab βλέπουμε ότι ήδη έχει επιλέξει το SQL Cluster Disk. Σε παραγωγικό περιβάλλον φυσικά θα έχουμε περισσότερους δίσκους για κάθε βάση/log.

Μετά φτάνομε στο ready to install και πατάμε install. Περιμένουμε να γίνει η εγκατάσταση αργά και βασανιστικά μέχρι να δούμε το υπέροχο Completed successful.

Και αν πάμε στο Failover Cluster Manager στους ρόλους θα δούμε το SQL Server

Εδώ τελειώνει η εγκατάσταση του πρώτου Node. Κάνουμε Mount το ISO της SQL στο δεύτερο node και ξεκινάμε το Setup. Επιλέγουμε Add node to a SQL Server failover cluster

Για το lab επιλέγω πάλι Evaluation, κάνω accept policies κλπ και πάμε για το installation.
Στο Cluster Node Configuration ελέγχουμε ότι έχει βρει το SQL cluster που δημιουργήσαμε και πατάμε Next

Στο Cluster Network Configuration ελέγχουμε ότι έχει βρει την IP του SQL Cluster και πατάμε next

Στο Service Accounts δίνουμε το password του Account Που έχουμε ήδη δηλώσει για SQL Engine & Agent

Περνάμε τους ελέγχους και πατάμε install για να προσθέσει το Node στο Cluster και περιμένουμε μέχρι να να δούμε το Completed successful μήνυμα.

Πάμε τώρα να δοκιμάσουμε ότι το SQL Role Μπορεί να κάνει failover και στα δύο Nodes.
Ανοίγουμε το Failover Cluster Manager πηγαίνουμε στο Roles, επιλέγουμε το “SQL Server …”, δεξί click / Move και πατάμε “Select Node…”

Διαλέγουμε το δεύτερο Node και πατάμε OK

Περιμένουμε στο Status να γίνει Pending και μετά Running. Πλέον στο “Owner Node” πρέπει να αναφέρει στο δεύτερο Node, στο Lab, Win2012R202

Η ιδέα είναι να έχουμε ένα SQL Flailover Cluster στο Primary Site και στο υπάρχον Cluster να προσθέσουμε ένα AlwaysOn Availability group για το DR. Λόγο του μεγέθους της υλοποίησης θα γίνει τρία Posts. Ένα το Failover Cluster, ένα η εγκατάσταση της SQL σε Failover Clster και ένα η υλοποίηση του AlwaysON Availability Groups.

Windows Server 2012 R2 Failover Cluster with FreeNAS 9.3

Ξεκίνησα φτιάχνοντας ένα VM FreeNAS για να μπορέσω να έχω με όσα λιγότερα resources ένα ISCSI Storage. Το FreeNAS θέλει 2GB Ram για την εγκατάσταση και το initial setup αλλά μετά το κατεβάζω σε 512MB Ram, έτσι κι αλλιώς οι απαιτήσεις μου θα είναι ελάχιστες. Δεν θα μείνω σε λεπτομέρειες για την εγκατάσταση του FreeNAS, κατεβάζουμε το ISO από το http://www.freenas.org/download/ και φτιάχνουμε ένα VM. Κάνουμε boot από το ISO και ακολουθούμε τον Wizard όπου διαλέγουμε δίσκο εγκατάστασης και δίνουμε root password. Τέλος αφού ανοίξει έχουμε 14 επιλογές, διαλέγουμε την 1 και ρυθμίζουμε το δίκτυο. Για το lab έδωσα 192.168.193.152/24
Αφού ρυθμίσουμε το δίκτυο επιστρέφουμε στις επιλογές μόνο που πλέον μας ενημερώνει για την διεύθυνση του web interface, όπως στην εικόνα:

Πριν κάνω login στο web interface έχω ήδη φτιάξει 2 δίσκους στο FreeNAS VM ώστε να αναλάβει ο wizard να φτιάξει volumes κλπ, αν και είναι πολύ απλό να τα κάνεις και manual στο FreNAS.
Κάνω login στο FreeNAS web interface και ακολουθώ τον wizard. Δίνω pool name

Δίνω share name και διαλέγω iSCSI

Και αφού τελειώσει ο wizard έχουμε έτοιμο το iscsi target.

Στη συνέχεια χρειαζόμαστε ένα Domain Controller. Μιας που μιλάμε για low resources lab, έφτιαξα ένα VM με 512 MB Ram και 1 CPU και έβαλα Windows Server 2012 r2 Core. Με sconfig.cmd ανοίγουμε τις επιλογές και δίνουμε computer name, IP κλπ

Και στη συνέχεια με powershell τον κάνουμε Domain Controller. Πρώτα βάζουμε domain services και management tools και στη συνέχεια τον προμοτάρουμε σε domain controller και DNS.

Έτοιμος και ο Domain Contoller. Πάμε για τα Cluster Nodes. Έχω φτιάξει ένα VM με 2GB Ram, 2 CPUs, 2 NICs & Windows Server 2012 R2. Sysprep και multiply και μπαμ έχουμε 3 όμορφα VMs.
Μια λεπτομέρεια, επειδή θα χρειαστούμε σε όλα τα VMs Failover Cluster και επίσης η SQL 2012 θέλει .NetFramework 3.5, στο template VM βάζουμε και αυτά.

Ξεκινάμε το Failover Cluster για να βάλουμε SQL.
Ανοίγουμε το πρώτο VM, rename, στο lab το ονόμασα Win2012R201 (πρωτότυπο ε?) και κάνουμε join στο domain.
Δίνουμε στην μια NIC μια IP που θα βλέπει το Domain και το FreeNAS και στην άλλη NIC ένα διαφορετικό subnet που θα βλέπει μόνο το άλλο Node. Για ευκολία έχω κάνει rename την μια κάρτα Domain με IP 192.168.193.153 και την άλλη Heartbeat με IP 172.16.5.1

Στη συνέχεια ενεργοποιούμε το iscsi initiator από administrator tools και προσθέτουμε το iscsi target δίνοντας την IP του FreeNAS και πατώντας quick connect και μετά Connect και διαλέγουμε και το Multi path. Μετά στο Volumes and Devices tab πατάμε Auto Configure. Τέλος στο Device manager κάνουμε initialize τον δίσκο, format και του δίνουμε ένα γράμμα. Για test φτιάχνουμε ένα text αρχείο στο δίσκο.

Το ίδιο κάνουμε και στο δεύτερο VM. Για να σιγουρευτούμε ότι και οι δύο μπορούν να γράψουν στον ίδιο δίσκο δημιουργούμε και εδώ ένα αρχείο. Σαν αποτέλεσμα πρέπει να έχουμε και τα 2 αρχεία.

Ανοίγουμε το Failover Cluster Manager από τα Administrative Tools και πρώτα τρέχουμε το Validate Configuration, διαλέγουμε και τους 2 member servers που ετοιμάσαμε με το iscsi και τρέχουμε το test.

Μόλις τελειώσει το validation κοιτάμε να μην έχει errors ή warnings και αν έχει τα διορθώνουμε και τον ξανατρέχουμε. Τέλος όταν έχει ολοκληρωθεί επιτυχώς, όπως στην εικόνα, το “create the cluster now using the validated nodes” είναι επιλεγμένο και πατώντας finish ανοίγει ο Create Cluster Wizard.
Δίνουμε Cluster Name και IP

Το αφήνουμε να προσθέσει όλο το διαθέσιμο storage και πατάμε next για να δημιουργηθεί το cluster

Αν ο cluster validator είχε τελειώσει επιτυχώς τότε και το cluster θα δημιουργηθεί επιτυχώς

Και voila έχουμε ένα όμορφο cluster

Μπορείτε να δείτε ότι το cluster network 1 είναι cluster only και έχει το subnet που δώσαμε για heartbeat και το cluster network 2 που είναι cluster and client έχει το domain subnet

Here comes our favorite PowerShell, combined once again with the Task Scheduler, to  give us more options.

My problem was that I wanted to backup some VMs daily and some VMs weekly. So I created two PowerShell scripts and two Task Scheduler Jobs.

The PowerShell script to backup VMs:

$policy = New-WBPolicy

Set-WBVSSBackupOptions -POLICY $policy -VSSFULLBACKUP

Start-WBBackup -Policy $policy

The above script reads text file that has a list with the Virtual Machines names, the c:vms.txt, and starts the backup to the W: Drive.

If you just want to backup one VM alter the 2nd line with

Get-WBVirtualMachine | ? VMName -eq vmName | Add-WBVirtualMachine -Policy $policy

To backup Drives or/and Folders use this script:

To check the current running Backup job you can run

Finally create a Task and attach the PowerShell script. Here you will find the powershell.exe “C:WindowsSystem32WindowsPowerShellv1.0″
